Behind France’s Islamic veil
Apr 27, 2010 English 1st Paragraph
France is one of several European countries considering a ban on the Islamic veil, and some restrictions on the niqab could become law within weeks. Claire Bolderson reports on how the debate plays into a broader struggle over French identity…
- A veil is a piece of material worn by women to cover the face or head.
- A niqâb (Arabic: means “Mask”) is a veil which covers the face, worn by some Muslim women as a part of sartorial hijāb. Niqab is most common in the Arab countries of the Persian Gulf such as Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, and the UAE. It is also common in Pakistan. For more information click here.
