Merry means happy, for example, “the merry laughter of the children”. Another example: If you are going to the pub, a party, a celebration etc and a friend asks you if he/she could accompany you, you may say “The more the merrier!” (= if there are more of us, we’ll be happier) to tell him/her that you’ll be happy if he/she comes, too). Indeed, the more the merrier, don’t you think? …
