New Year’s Eve in France
Dec 31, 2010 English 1st Paragraph
The French call New Year’s Eve “la Saint-Sylvestre“. It is usually celebrated with a feast called le Réveillon de la Saint-Sylvestre (also called Cap d’Any in Northern Catalonia). This feast customarily includes special dishes like foie gras, seafood such as oysters and drinks like champagne. The celebration can be a simple, intimate dinner with friends and family or a much fancier ball (une soirée dansante)…
- New Year’s Eve is (the evening of) the last day of the year. As you see, it is capitalised, i.e. the first letter of each word is written as a capital.
- customarily: usually; according to the customs
- Foie gras is a French dish (= special food), made of the liver of a duck or goose.
- An intimate dinner is a dinner with people who are very close to you, like family and very good friends.
- fancier: more stylish and/or expensive, like going to a chic restaurant
- A ball is an occasion when many people dance in a place.

As to me, I hope I’ll be able to learn a lot of new things this year, maybe improve my French a bit, for example…
Oh, yes, and I am going to do 20 minutes of light exercise at least 3 times a week and go for a 1-2 hour walk at least once a week. Not too ambitious, are they?
