Prank on a Belgian call centre (with English subtitles)

Mobistar, a leading phone operator in Belgium, is notorious for its lousy customer service. Customers have complained for years but there has been no progress. So the guys from Basta (a new Belgian comedy show) decided to return the favour to Mobistar and pulled off this amazing prank. The video is in Dutch with English subtitles. (Belgium has three official languages: Dutch, French, and German.)

  • A prank is something you do to cheat other people as a joke (without causing any harm).
  • Big companies usually have call centres in which telephone operators, technicians etc provide information to their customers, or sell or advertise its products or services by telephone.
  • Subtitles are text which is shown at the bottom of a film to explain what is being said
  • A leading company is a very big and important (maybe the biggest and most successful) company in a field of activity, for example at the moment Google is the world’s leading search engine.
  • If you are notorious, you are famous for a bad reason, you have a bad reputation.
  • Lousy means very bad, awful.
  • When someone does you a favour (does something kind to help you, for example let you use their car), you try to return the favour (also do something kind for them). In this video the expression “return the favour” is used sarcastically (= say something but mean the opposite).
  • When you pull off (something difficult), you succeed in doing it.
