Cooking Tips

You may already be familiar with some (I
certainly hope not all!) of the following cooking tips and you may
also wish to offer some of your own in the comments section which
would be fabulous. So here we go:
1- If you have used only a part of a large bottle
of dried whey and want to keep the rest of it in the fridge, fill up
the bottle with cold water. Close the lid tightly and put the bottle
in the refrigerator. This way, you won’t have to worry about fungi for
weeks and weeks to come.
2- Before squeezing lemons to extract the juice,
cut them in halves and heat them in the microwave for 5 to 10 seconds.
The juice will come out much more willingly!
3- Speaking of microwaves, when do you add salt
to soups, broths, and other water-containing dishes you want to cook
in the microwave? Always add the salt either towards the end of the
cooking time or at the waiting period (the time you let the cooked
dish sit before you eat it which is an absolute must when microwaving)
otherwise you’ll end up with a very dry dish because salt makes the
food lose water rapidly.
4- Looking for a nice, healthy dessert to warm
you up on winter evenings? Steam a whole quince (skin and all) or if
you are one of those unfortunate souls who cannot bring themselves to
like the heavenly taste of a quince, well then, I suppose you have to
settle for apples. When the quince is tender but not squishy, put it
in a nice dish, sprinkle with caster sugar and cinnamon, and serve
immediately. For a fancy variation, cut it carefully in half once it
is baked, then stud the back of the halves with almond wedges to make
it resemble a porcupine and lash it with Hershey chocolate syrup or
honey or something similar.

5- For a hearty winter soup, add a couple of
sticks of carrot, four tomatoes, a bell pepper and any other veggies
that you like to a cup of chicken broth seasoned with salt and pepper.
Cook, fully blend and serve with slices of lemon and toasted bread.
6- Having a fussy kid who won’t open his/her
mouth even to taste your cooking masterpieces? Make sure to have
him/her help with preparing the food. It does wonders in sharpening
the appetite, well, at least the kid’s. By the time you are done in
the kitchen, you might have completely lost your appetite looking at
that blasphemous mess that you now have to clean up!
7- Before dicing an onion, peel it and put it in
the freezer for half an hour. It won’t cause so many tears afterwards!
8- Have you added too much salt? Peel a potato
and add it to the dish you are cooking and remove it before serving if
it doesn’t go with the rest of the ingredients. The extra salt will be
absorbed by the potato.
Bon appetit,
