It all
started over a cup of coffee, an IT manager (Jean-Pierre) and a
language teacher (Pejman) meeting for a language lesson.
Here is our story:
Jean-Pierre's Story:
It was a nice
summer day when I met Pejman for the first time in front
of Notre-dame de Paris. Our language lesson started
right away and right there, and continued as we walked
and later as we sat over a cup of coffee in a cafe.
I was impressed
by pejman's approach to language learning, i.e. learning
English through English, creating an English atmosphere,
relating learning to the student's real life and work
experiences, insisting on the use of complete sentences,
helping the students "learn how to learn" ... It was not
the sort of learning I was used to, but it worked.
Over the next
several months - and over numerous cups of coffee - we
wondered if we could make this first experience a
success story and bring this way of learning to lots and
lots of people across France who really need to learn
English but don't know how. And that's how Llearn &
Asynux was born...
Pejman's Story:
Yes, it WAS a
nice day, and what made it nicer was that my new student
- who was not exactly in the prime of youth - was quite
receptive to new ideas and methods.
This is not
usually the case with my French students. The French -
whom I am very fond of - are so used to learning
languages through translation and explanations of
grammar etc, that it sometimes takes me several sessions
to finally bring them around to my way of learning.
Actually I sometimes have to confiscate my students’
notebooks and pens during the first few sessions to
prevent them from trying to write everything down and
try to understand and explain it right on the spot.
It takes a
combination of coaxing and pushing and reasoming to make
them try to learn through speaking and using the
language until they finally realise that (Yes!) you can
learn a language without translating, without writing
everything down first, and without explaining grammar
and other points directly. You can start by listening
and speaking and using the language, by discussing your
immediate surrounding and your life experiences... and
refine what you know and take notes later.
With
Jean-Pierre, fortunately things were much easier. He was
quite un-French in this respect. "Quite", mind you, not
completely! We DID have our share of difficult moments
when he grew a bit impatient and I had to keep pushing
while at the same time explaining why it was important
to learn that way, though he would always claim a few
minutes later that he had just been trying to tease me!
Over several
months we gradually discovered more about each other and
our common values and tendencies such as strong work
ethics and a joy in creating and sharing, and that was
the beginning of a partnership…
